SIP Accepting Tiny House Trailers

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are a popular option for tiny house building. But until recently, securely attaching SIPs to a trailer has been a challenge.

Fred has designed multiple options for our clients using SIPs in their tiny house design. See our images on how Fred’s Tiny House Trailers can be made to accept different SIP products. This makes it easier to build with SIPs, knowing they’ll stay safely in place.

Custom Trailer Design for Your SIP Build

We understand that every SIP build is different, and we can design your trailer to suit the specific SIP products you’re using.

Whether it’s how to attach walls or figure out the flooring options, there are several ways to accomplish this with a SIP-accepting trailer.

We’ll work closely with both your instructions and the SIP manufacturer’s installation manual to make sure everything is just right for your project.

Are SIPs a good fit for DIY builders?

Before deciding to build a SIP tiny house, here are a few things to consider:

  1. Weight Savings
Not all SIPs are lighter than timber or steel frames. Some, like “cool room panels,” are lightweight but come with their own set of challenges (see #4).

2. Fastening SIPs
Your SIP manufacturer’s fastening recommendations are helpful, but be sure to ask if their methods are designed for a tiny house on a trailer. The trailer is a moving, vibrating base, so fastening methods need to take that into account.

3. Key Fastening Points
Discuss these fastening points with your SIP manufacturer:

    • SIP to SIP
    • SIP to trailer
    • SIP to roof
    • SIP to loft

4. Running Services (Plumbing & Electrical)
The tricky part with SIPs is running services like plumbing and electrical without compromising the panel’s structure. If you need to run services outside the SIP, it can take away from the simplicity and elegance of the build.

5. Complexity
While SIPs can be great, they might take the project out of DIY territory. If you’re not familiar with SIP construction, hiring a professional with experience could save you some serious headaches.
